Templates and Pages: Linked or not Linked

With some template based methods of creating pages you are asked to choose how you want the page to connect to the Template's Layout.

What is the 'Source' Layout?

The Source Layout is a CorelDraw file associated to a page or template. It determines the 'look' of a page or template, including the Text and image field size and location, background colours and/or styles, font colour, size, style and position. It also determines which text, image and background elements can be edited in Audience.foundation. Tagged elements (those that are renamed in Object Manager) can be edited in Audience.foundation. In the table below, the Layout includes the elements in the left column.

Shared or Unique Layout

  • Share the Template's Layout.  The page and template are permanently linked to the same Layout (a CorelDraw file), such that a change to the shared Layout (things like font size, colour, graphic size, etc) affects the template and all pages sharing that layout. Important Note: New fields (text fields or graphic fields) must never be added to a shared Layout as these fields will not be applied to pages previously created using that layout, and can yield unexpected results when using the template in the future.
  • Have its own copy of the Template's Layout.  The layout becomes unique to the page, and changes to the (new) template apply to that page only.

Special Considerations

  • New fields (text or graphic) must never be added to a Shared Template Layout. All pages previously created with the template will become disconnected, and it can yield unexpected results for future pages as well. To add new fields, create a new copy of the template first and make the changes to the copy.
  • Only changes made to the Layout affect linked pages. Changes submitted in Audience.foundation (anything in the Page Details tabs, including schedule, description, etc) do not affect pages previously created using the template, even when those pages are linked.
  • Most elements in the Page Layout will rescale correctly when you copy a page or template into a zone of a different size. Paragraph text elements may require that you modify the text's font size in CorelDraw. To do so, double-click on the page image to open Corel, and follow the instructions in Modify Text Fields in CorelDraw.
